Is there any circumstance where a 30ish woman can wear a ring on her left ring-finger and yet not be married/attached? Not a classic big ol' diamond ring, necessarily -- just a ring.
Let's assume that she's not Batwoman. Actually, as I start to anticipate the answers from the "peanut gallery", I'm beginning to question the wisdom of this poll. Not that the finest blog on the web doesn't have the finest readership, but many of you frighten me.

My sister wears a ring on her left hand ring finger as does her boyfriend. They consider themselves "married" though they've never had a ceremony or license and just picked up the rings in a Mexican airport. I guess it's helpful to let everyone know you're taken.
However, if you're not taken and wear a ring, you can use it to scare off potential suitors.
Sure, a woman may wear a ring and not be engaged or married. It's not a given.
It depends. In this country, a ring on the left hand means you are taken. If her intent is to broadcast that she is not available for romantic pursuit, then a ring on that finger is fine.
However, if she considers herself available and open to dating, then no ring should ever be worn on that finger regardless of the style.
Many cultures are different, but in this culture we symbolize committment to another with the ring on the left ring finger. Diamonds are not the only stone used in wedding rings anymore either, so the fact that it is not a diamond has little to nothing to do with it.
No.
There are no circumstances when a woman who is not "otherwise occupied" can wear a left-hand ring finger ring.
And you SHOULD be afraid of many of us.

The Hegemom (Phreade's newest name for me...)
How interesting. I had this very conversation this evening at a bar with a few friends. The other girl present and I both felt it was ok to wear a ring on 'that finger' but the guys both said no.
I have a lot of rings and prefer that finger...due to writing and holding stuff it just seems more comfortable...so I wear lots of fashion type rings on my left hand--ring finger..apparently I shouldn't be.
The guys said it signifies (no matter what the ring looks like) that we are taken and therefore the men will not approach.
I think that is crazy....but maybe that's why I'm single.
Ok... we are doing more polls because clearly that "engages" (get it?) the readership.
My feeling is/was that a ring definitely means "not available".

ps. LOL re: Hegemom. That's a good blog name
I end up wearing rings on my left hand, because I'm right handed and they get in the way. I don't trust the intellegence level of the men I seem to attract, so do I now have to avoid any rings on the left hand in case a casual 'check out' and they just see "RING" and not which finger it is on??? CC readers, help a single girl out here!
